Four Mystery Plays
GA 14
The Portal of Initiation
Scene 11
The Temple of the Sun. Hidden site of the mysteries of the Hierophants.
Capesius and Strader appear as in Scene 4.
Retardus (to Capesius and Strader before him):
Ye have brought bitter grief to me, my friends.
The office which I did entrust to you
Ye have administered with ill success.
I call you now before my judgment seat.
To thee, Capesius, I did entrust
Full measure of the spirit, that ideas
Of mankind's upward striving might compose,
With graceful words, the content of thy speech,
Which should have worked convincingly on man.
Then thine activity I did direct
Into those gatherings of men, wherein
Thou didst Johannes and Maria meet.
Their tendency towards the spirit-sight
Thou shouldst have superseded by the power
Which thy words should have exercised on them.
Instead of that thou didst thyself give up
Unto the influence which flows from them.—
And to thee, Strader, did I show the way
That leads to scientific certainty.
Thou hadst by rigid thinking to destroy
The magic power that comes from spirit-sight.
But yet thou lackedst feeling's certain touch.
The power of thought did slip away from thee,
When opportunity for conquest came.
My fate is close-entwined with your deeds,
Through you are these two seekers after truth
Now lost for evermore from my domain;
For to the Brethren I must give their souls.
Capesius:
Thy trusty messenger I could not be.
Thou gav'st me power to picture human life;
And I could well portray whate'er inspired
The souls of men at this time or at that:
But yet it was impossible for me
To gift my words, which painted but the past,
With power to fill and satisfy men's souls.
Strader:
The weakness which must needs befall me too
Was but a true reflection of thine own.
Knowledge indeed thou couldest give to me:
But not the power to still that yearning voice,
Which strives for truth in every human heart.
Deep in mine inmost soul I none the less
Felt other powers continually arise.
Retardus:
See now then what result your weakness brings.
The Brethren are approaching with those souls
In whom they will o'erthrow my power. E'en now
Johannes and Maria feel their might.
(Enter Benedictus with Lucifer and Ahriman;
behind them Johannes and Maria.)
Benedictus (to Lucifer):
Johannes' and Maria's souls have now
No longer room for blind unseeing power:
To spirit-life they have been lifted up.
Lucifer:
Then must I straightway from their souls depart.
The wisdom unto which they have attained,
Doth give them power to see me, and my sway
O'er souls of men doth only last so long
As I remain invisible to them.
Yet doth the power continue which hath been
From the creation of the worlds mine own.
Now that I can no longer tempt their souls,
My power will cause within their spirit-life
Most beauteous fruits to ripen and endure.
Benedictus (to Ahriman):
Johannes' and Maria's souls have now
Destroyed all error's darkness in themselves;
And spirit-sight hath been revealed to them.
Ahriman:
I must indeed renounce their spirits then:
For they will turn henceforth unto the light.
Yet one thing hath not yet been ta'en from me;
With sense-appearance to delight their souls.
And though no longer they will deem it truth,
Yet will they see how truth it doth reveal.
(Enter the Other Maria.)
Theodosius (to the Other Maria):
Close intertwined was thy destiny
With thine exalted sister's loftier life:
The light of love I could impart to her:
But not the warmth of love, so long as thou
Didst only let thy noble gift arise
From the dim feeling life within thy soul,
And didst not strive to see it clear and bold
In the full light of wisdom's certainty.
The influence of the Temple does not reach
Unto the nature of vague impulses,
E'en though such impulse wills to work for good.
The Other Maria:
I must admit a noble gift of love
Can only work salvation in the light.
So to the temple I now wend my way.
Mine inner feeling shall in future times
Not rob the light of love of its results.
Theodosius:
Through this, thine insight, thou dost give me power
To make Maria's soul-light on the earth
Run smooth and evenly upon its path:
For aye aforetime it must lose its might
In souls, such as thine own was heretofore,
Which would not unify their love with light.
Johannes (to the Other Maria):
I see in thee that nature of the soul,
Which also holdest sway within mine own.
I was unable to find out the way
Which led to thine exalted sister's soul
So long as in my heart the warmth of love
From love's light ever held itself apart.
The sacrifice which to the temple's shrine
Thou bring'st, shall be repeated in my soul.
Therein the warmth of love shall sacrifice
Itself unto love's wonder-working light.
Maria:
Johannes, in the realm of spirit-life
Thou hast attained to knowledge through myself.
To spirit knowledge thou canst only add
True soul-existence, when thou findest too
Thine own soul, as thou didst find mine before.
(Enter Philia, Astrid, and Luna.)
Philia:
Then from the whole creation of the worlds
The joy of souls shall be revealed to thee.
Astrid:
From thine whole being then can be outpoured
The light and radiance of the warmth of souls.
Luna:
Then shalt thou dare to live out thine own self,
When such light can illuminate thy soul.
(Enter Felix and Felicia Balde.)
Romanus (to Felix Balde):
Long hast thou from the temple held thyself.
Thou only wouldst admit enlightenment,
When light from thine own soul revealed itself.
Men of thy nature rob me of the power
To give my light unto men's souls on earth.
They will but draw from unillumined deeps
The gifts they have to offer in their life.
Felix Balde:
But now at length 'twas even man's illusion
That urged me on from the dark deeps to light,
And let me to the temple find my way.
Romanus:
The fact that thou hast hither found thy way
Gives me the power to give light to the will
Of both Johannes and Maria here.
That it no more may follow forces blind,
But from world-aims henceforth direct itself.
Maria:
Johannes, thou hast seen thine own self now
In spirit in myself. Thou shalt live out
Thine own existence as a spirit, when
The world's light can behold itself in thee.
Johannes (to Felix Balde):
In thee, good brother Felix, I behold
The force of soul which in my spirit too
Hath held the will fast bound. This temple's light
Thou hast at length been ready to approach;
So will I guide my spirit's strength of will
Straight forward to the temple of the soul.
Retardus:
Johannes' and Maria's souls e'en now
Escape from my domain: how then shall they
Discover all that springs forth from my might?
So long as they did lack within their souls
The fundaments of knowledge they did still
Find joy and pleasure in my gifts, but now
I see myself compelled to let them go.
Felicia:
That man without thine aid may fire himself
To rational thought, that have I shown to thee:
From me a learning streams that shall bear fruit.
Johannes:
This learning shall be wedded to the light,
Which from this temple's source can fill men's souls.
Retardus:
Capesius, my son, thou art now lost.
Thou hast withdrawn thyself from my domain
Before the temple's light can shine for thee.
Benedictus:
He hath begun the path. He feels the light.
And he will win the strength to search and know
In his own soul all that, which up till now
Good Dame Felicia hath produced for him.
Strader:
Then I alone seem lost, for of myself
I cannot cast all doubts from out my heart;
And surely I shall never find again
The way that doth unto the temple lead.
Theodora:
From out thine heart a glow of light spreads forth;
A human image is now born therefrom;
And I can hear the words, which do proceed
From this same human form. E'en thus they sound:
‘I have achieved the power to reach the light.’
My friend, trust thou thyself! These very words,
When thy time is fulfilled, thyself shalt speak.
Elftes Bild.
(Der Sonnen-Tempel; oberirdisch, verborgene Mysterienstätte der Hierophanten.)
Retardus: (vor ihm Capesius und Strader.)
Ihr habt mir bittre Not gebracht.
Das Amt, das euch von mir gegeben war,
Ihr habt es schlecht verwaltet.
Ich fordre euch vor meinen Richterstuhl.
Capesius, ich gab dir hohe Geistesart,
So daß Ideen vom Menschenstreben
Anmutvoll deiner Rede Inhalt waren
Und überzeugend hätten wirken sollen.
Ich lenkte deine Wirksamkeit in Kreise,
In denen du Johannes und Maria trafest.
Du hättest ihre Neigung für das Geistesschauen
Verdrängen sollen durch die Kraft,
Die deine Worte hätten wirken sollen.
Statt dessen übergabst du selbst dich nur
Der Wirkung, die von ihnen kommt.
Dir, Strader, öffnet ich den Weg
In sichre Wissensbahnen.
Zur einen oder andern Zeit begeistert;
Doch war es mir nicht möglich,
Den Worten, welche das Vergangne malten,
Die Kraft zu geben, Seelen ganz zu füllen.
Strader:
Die Schwäche, welche mich befallen mußte,
Sie ist das Abbild nur der deinen.
Du konntest mir das Wissen schenken;
Sie haben Raum nicht mehr für blinde Kraft;
Sie sind zum Geistessein erhoben.
Lucifer:
Ich muß die Seelen wohl verlassen.
Die Weisheit, welche sie errungen,
Sie gibt die Kräfte, mich zu schauen.
Ich habe über Seelen nur Gewalt,
So lang sie mich nicht schauen können.
Doch bleibt die Macht bestehn,
Die mir im Weltenwerden zugeteilt.
Und kann ich ihre Seelen nicht versuchen,
Wird meine Kraft im Geiste ihnen erst
Die schönsten Früchte reifen lassen.
Benedictus (zu Ahriman):
Johannes’ und Marias Seelen,
Sie haben Irrtums Finsternis in sich vertilgt.
Das Geistesauge haben sie eröffnet.
Ahriman:
Ich muß auf ihren Geist verzichten.
Sie werden sich zum Lichte wenden;
Doch bleibt mir’s unbenommen,
Die Seelen mit dem Scheine zu beglücken.
Sie werden nicht mehr glauben,
Daß er die Wahrheit sei,
Doch schauen können,
Wie er sie offenbart.
Theodosius (zur andren Maria):
Es war dein Schicksal eng verbunden
Mit deiner höhern Schwester Leben.
Ich konnte ihr der Liebe Licht,
Doch nicht der Liebe Wärme geben,
Solange du beharren wolltest,
Dein Edles aus dem dunklen Fühlen nur
In dir erstehn zu lassen,
Und nicht in vollem Weisheitslichte
Es klar zu schauen dir erstrebtest.
In dunkler Triebe Wesen reicht
Des Tempels Einfluss nicht,
Auch wenn sie Gutes wirken wollen.
Die andre Maria:
Ich muß erkennen, daß ein Edles nur
Im Lichte heilsam wirken kann,
Und wende mich zum Tempel.
Mein Fühlen soll in Zukunft
Dem Liebeslicht nicht seine Wirkung rauben.
Theodosius:
Durch deine Einsicht gibst du mir die Kraft,
Marias Seelenlicht den Weg zur Welt zu bahnen.
Es mußte stets die Macht verlieren
An Seelen deiner frühern Art,
Die Licht mit Liebe nicht verbinden wollen.
Johannes (zur andren Maria):
Ich schau in dir die Seelenart,
Die auch im eignen Innern mich beherrscht;
Den Weg zu deiner höhern Schwester,
Ihn konnte ich nicht finden,
So lang in mir der Liebe Wärme
Vom Liebeslicht getrennt sich hielt.
Das Opfer, welches du dem Tempel bringst,
In meiner Seele soll es nachgebildet sein.
In ihr soll Liebeswärme sich
Dem Liebeslichte opfern.
Maria:
Johannes, du erwarbest dir im Geisterreich
Erkenntnis jetzt durch mich;
Du fügst zur Geisterkenntnis Seelensein,
Wenn du die eigne Seele findest,
Wie du die meine hast gefunden.
Es wird aus allem Weltenwerden
Die Seelenfreude sich dir offenbaren.
Astrid:
Es wird dein ganzes Sein
Die Seelenwärme jetzt durchleuchten können.
Luna:
Du wirst dich selber leben dürfen,
Wenn Licht in deiner Seele leuchten kann.
Romanus (zu Felix Balde):
Du hieltest dich dem Tempel lange fern;
Du wolltest nur Erleuchtung anerkennen,
Wenn eigner Seele Licht sich offenbarte.
Die Menschen deines Wesens rauben mir die Kraft,
Mein Licht zu geben Erdenseelen.
Sie wollen nur aus dunklen Tiefen schöpfen,
Was sie dem Leben bringen sollen.
Felix Balde:
Es hat der Menschenwahn nun selbst
Aus dunklen Tiefen mir das Licht gewiesen
Und mich den Weg zum Tempel finden lassen.
Romanus:
Daß du den Weg hieher gefunden,
Kann mir die Kraft verleihn,
Johannes und Maria
Den Willen zu erleuchten,
Daß er nicht blinden Mächten folge,
Daß er aus Weltenzielen
Sich seine Richtung gibt.
Maria:
Johannes, du hast dich nun selbst
Im Geist an meinem Selbst geschaut;
Du wirst als Geist dein Sein erleben,
Wenn Weltenlicht in dir sich schauen kann.
Johannes (zu Felix Balde):
Ich schau in dir, mein Bruder Felix,
Die Seelenkraft, die mir im eignen Geist
Den Willen hielt gebunden.
Du hast den Weg zum Tempel finden wollen;
Ich will in meinem Geist der Willenskraft
Den Weg zum Seelentempel weisen.
Retardus:
Johannes und Marias Seelen
Entringen meinem Reiche sich.
Wie sollen sie nun finden,
Was meiner Macht entspringt?
Solang im eignen Innern
Des Wissens Gründe ihnen fehlten,
Erfreuten sie sich meiner Gaben;
Gezwungen seh’ ich mich,
Von ihnen abzulassen.
Frau Balde:
Daß ohne dich der Mensch
Zum Denken sich befeuern kann,
Ich habe dir’s gezeigt.
Aus mir entströmt ein Wissen,
Das Früchte tragen darf.
Johannes:
Es soll dies Wissen sich dem Licht vermählen.
Das aus des Tempels vollem Quell
Den Menschenseelen leuchten kann.
Retardus:
Capesius, mein Sohn,
Du bist verloren;
Du hast dich mir entzogen,
Bevor des Tempels Licht dir leuchten kann.
Benedictus:
Er hat den Weg begonnen.
Er fühlt das Licht
Und wird die Kraft gewinnen,
In eigner Seele zu ergründen,
Was ihm Felicia bis jetzt erzeugen muß.
Strader:
Verloren scheine ich allein.
Ich kann die Zweifel selbst nicht bannen,
Und wiederfinden werde ich doch sicher nicht
Den Weg, der zu dem Tempel führt.
Theodora:
Aus deinem Herzen
Entschwebt ein Lichtesschein,
Ein Menschenbild entringt sich ihm.
Und Worte kann ich hören,
Die aus dem Menschenbilde kommen;
Sie klingen so:
»Ich habe mir errungen
Die Kraft, zum Licht zu kommen.«
Mein Freund, vertraue dir!
Du wirst die Worte selber sprechen,
Wenn deine Zeit erfüllt wird sein.
(Vorhang fällt.)
Scene Eleven
(The Temple of the Sun; above ground, hidden place of mystery of the Hierophants.)
Retardus: (Capesius and Strader in front of him.)
You have brought me bitter hardship.
The office that was given to you by me,
you have mismanaged.
I summon you before my judgment seat.
Capesius, I gave you a high spirit,
so that ideas of human striving
were gracefully the content of your speech
and should have had a convincing effect.
I directed your influence into circles
Where you met Johannes and Maria.
You should have suppressed their inclination for spiritual vision
Through the power
That your words should have exerted.
Instead, you yourself surrendered
To the influence that comes from them.
To you, Strader, I opened the way
Into secure paths of knowledge.
You should have destroyed
The magical power of spiritual vision through rigorous thinking.
But you lack the certainty of feeling.
The power of thinking escaped you When you had the opportunity to triumph.
My fate is closely linked to your actions.
Through you, those two seekers of truth
are lost to my realm for all time.
I must deliver the souls to the brothers.
Capesius:
I could never be a good messenger for you.
You gave me the strength to portray human life.
I could describe what inspires people
At one time or another;
But it was not possible for me
To give the words that painted the past
The power to fill souls completely.
Strader:
The weakness that had to afflict me
Is only a reflection of yours.
You could give me knowledge;
But not the power to satisfy all longing,
Which strives for truth in the human heart.
I always had to feel
Other powers within me.
Retardus:
You see the effect of your weakness.
The brothers are already approaching with the souls
In which they will overcome me.
John and Mary follow their power.
(Benedictus with Lucifer, Ahriman, behind them John and Mary.)
Benedictus (to Lucifer):
The souls of John and Mary,
They no longer have room for blind power;
They have been elevated to spiritual beings.
Lucifer:
I must leave the souls.
The wisdom they have attained
gives them the power to see me.
I have power over souls only
as long as they cannot see me.
But the power remains
that was given to me in the creation of the world.
And if I cannot tempt their souls, my power in the spirit will first
bear the most beautiful fruits.
Benedictus (to Ahriman):
The souls of John and Mary,
They have destroyed the darkness of error within themselves.
They have opened the eye of the spirit.
Ahriman:
I must renounce their spirit.
They will turn to the light;
But I remain free
To bless their souls with the light.
They will no longer believe
That it is the truth,
But they will be able to see
How it reveals them.
Theodosius (to the other Mary):
Your fate was closely linked
To the life of your higher sister.
I could give her the light of love,
But not the warmth of love,
As long as you insisted
To let your nobility arise only from dark feelings
Within you,
And did not strive to see it clearly
In the full light of wisdom.
The influence of the temple does not reach
Dark instincts,
Even if they want to do good.
The other Mary:
I must recognize that nobility can only
Have a healing effect in the light,
And I turn to the temple.
In the future, my feelings shall not
Rob the light of love of its effect.
Theodosius:
Through your insight, you give me the strength
pave the way for Mary's soul light to the world.
It always had to lose its power
to souls of your former kind,
who do not want to combine light with love.
John (to the other Mary):
I see in you the kind of soul
That also rules within me;
The path to your higher sister,
I could not find it,
As long as the warmth of love within me
Remained separated from the light of love.
The sacrifice you bring to the temple,
Shall be replicated in my soul.
In it, the warmth of love shall
be sacrificed to the light of love.
Mary:
John, you have now gained knowledge in the spirit realm
through me;
you add soulfulness to spiritual knowledge
when you find your own soul,
as you have found mine.
Philia:
Everything will become worlds
The joy of the soul will reveal itself to you.
Astrid:
Your whole being
Will now be able to shine through the warmth of the soul.
Luna:
You will be allowed to live yourself,
When light can shine in your soul.
Romanus (to Felix Balde):
You kept your distance from the temple for a long time;
You only wanted to acknowledge enlightenment,
When the light of your own soul revealed itself.
The people of your nature rob me of the strength,
To give my light to earthly souls.
They only want to draw from dark depths,
What they should bring to life.
Felix Balde:
Human delusion itself has now
Shown me the light from dark depths
And let me find the way to the temple.
Romanus:
That you have found your way here,
Can give me the strength
To enlighten John and Mary
With the will
Not to follow blind powers,
But to find its direction
He may set his direction.
Mary:
John, you have now seen yourself
In spirit within my being;
You will experience your being as spirit,
When world light can see itself within you.
John (to Felix Balde):
I see in you, my brother Felix,
The soul power that kept my own spirit
Bound to its will.
You wanted to find the way to the temple;
I want to show the way to the temple of the soul
In my spirit of willpower.
Retardus:
The souls of John and Mary
Are breaking free from my realm.
How shall they now find
What springs from my power?
As long as they lacked
The foundations of knowledge within themselves,
They rejoiced in my gifts;
I am forced
To let them go.
Mrs. Balde:
That without you, man
Can inspire himself to think,
I have shown you.
From me flows a knowledge
That may bear fruit.
John:
This knowledge shall marry the light.
From the temple's full source
It can shine upon human souls.
Retardus:
Capesius, my son,
You are lost;
You have withdrawn from me,
Before the temple's light can shine upon you.
Benedictus:
He has begun the journey.
He feels the light
And will gain the strength
To fathom in his own soul
What Felicia must create for him until now.
Strader:
I alone seem lost.
I cannot banish my doubts myself,
And I will certainly not find
The path that leads to the temple.
Theodora:
From your heart
A light shines forth,
A human image emerges from it.
And I can hear words
That come from the human image;
They sound like this:
“I have gained
The power to come to the light.”
My friend, trust yourself!
You will speak the words yourself,
When your time is fulfilled.
(Curtain falls.)
