Lesson XIX
My dear friends,
Again we shall let the verse flow through our souls which can bring to mind how everything that is, was in the past and will be in the future, calls out to us to seek self-knowledge, for it is the foundation of all real, true cosmic knowledge.
O man, know thyself!
So resounds the Cosmic-Word.
You hear it strong in soul,
You feel it firm in spirit.
Who speaks with such cosmic might?
Who speaks with such depth of heart?
Does it work through distant radiant space
Into your senses' sense of being?
Does it ring through weaving waves of time
Into your life's evolving stream?
It's you yourself who,
In feeling space, in experiencing time,
Create the Word, feeling foreign
In the soulless void of space
Because you lose the force of thought
In time's destructive flow.
My dear sisters and brothers, we have let mantric verses pass into our souls which, through their force, contain the path into spirit-land, first passing the Guardian of the Threshold into what is at first a dark, gloomy, night-engulfed spiritual world, where light is felt, which then becomes light for our spiritual perception. We have seen in this spiritual world how the human being participates – usually unconsciously, though he can be conscious of it – in the dialogs of the higher hierarchies – as though the Cosmic Word itself were acting together with the higher hierarchies. And finally we have been able to move on to the cosmic realm where the choruses of the different hierarchies resound together. Let us now bring that to mind once more – how we had already continued from hearing what the beings of the second hierarchy were saying to where the beings of the first hierarchy speak. And now we are able to hear them speaking in harmony as a chorus.
The Guardian brings it to our attention; we know this from previous lessons:
See the ether-rainbow arc's
Light teeming round,
Let the light-creating force
Pass through your eyes,
Your I penetrate the circle,
Observe from the other side's vantage point
Color flooding the cosmic bowl.
After the Guardian reveals to us this spiritual secret of the rainbow, from the chorus or the Angeloi, Archangeloi and Archai we hear resound:
Sense our thoughts
Breathing the colors of life
Into the light-flooded bowl;
We carry the mirage of the senses
To spirit's domain of being
And turn, by the world inspired,
To serve the higher spirits.
The spirits of the third hierarchy explain how they wish to serve the spirits of the second hierarchy for the benefit of humanity: we hear again the Exusiai, Dynamis, Kyriotetes in chorus from their realm:
What you have received
From dead illusion made live:
We waken it to existence;
We give it to the rays,
Who manifest with love
The nothingness of matter
In the spirit's being.
And once we have heard how the beings of the second hierarchy, creating the world, approach our I; then the choir of the first hierarchy resounds – the Thrones, Seraphim and Cherubim:
In the willing of your worlds
Feel our world working:
Spirit glows in matter
When, thinking, we create.
Spirit creates in matter
When we live in willing:
World is the I-willing Spirit-Word.
Now we stand within the Spirit-Word, the Spirit-Word that underlies the creation of the world. We feel ourselves surrounded by this Spirit-Word. We feel the world penetrated by this Spirit-Word. We feel ourselves woven within this Spirit-Word. We feel it penetrating into our humanity. Finally we feel this cosmic Spirit-Word streaming into our hearts; we feel our whole humanity immersed in the waves of this Spirit-Word. We feel ourselves spiritually immersed in the spiritual world interwoven with the Word.
The Guardian is there in the distance. We had passed him by. He is now far in the distance. We now hear him as he softly speaks a last word of warning to our spirit-ear from afar. The Guardian speaks:
Who speaks in the Spirit-Word
With the voice
Which blazes in the cosmic fire?
From the realm of the first hierarchy comes the answer:
The flame of the stars speaks,
Seraphic Fire-Forces flame;
They flame also in my heart.
In the primal being's fount of love
The human heart finds
Creative spirit-flaming-speech:
It is I.
My dear sisters and brothers, if we wish to enter the esoteric realm, we should first feel that the ancient holy “'eyeh 'asher 'eyeh!” – “I am I”, “I am” is a holy word which resounds from that other worldly reality. What our fleeting thoughts understand as “I am” is only a reflection of it.
We must be aware that the true “I am” does not come from us in the earthly realm, that if we wish to say “I am” worthily, we must first enter the realm of the Seraphim, Cherubim and Thrones. Only there does “I am” sound true. Here in the earthly realm it is illusion.
In order to experience the true “I am” within us, we must hear the Cosmic-Word. So we must listen to the Guardian of the Threshold's question: who speaks in the Cosmic-Word? Seraphim, who wend their way through the cosmic waves with spiritual flames of lightning, where we now stand. The Word is flame, a flaming voice. And in experiencing ourselves in this blazing cosmic fire, which speaks the fire language in the flaming fire, we experience the true “I am”.
This is contained in the Guardian of the Threshold's question posed from the distance – we have passed him long ago – and the answer comes from the realm of the first hierarchy:

When human words resound, then human thinking speaks through human words. When the spirit's cosmic-word resounds, then cosmic thinking speaks through the spirit's cosmic-word. This lies in the Guardian's second question, which he now poses from afar.
The Guardian speaks from afar. The human-I knows itself to be in the realm of the Spirit-Word borne by the Seraphim, Cherubim, Thrones:
What thinks in the Spirit-Word
With thoughts
Which are formed from cosmic souls?
They are the thoughts that come from all the cosmic souls, which belong to the beings of the various hierarchies. They form and shape everything in the kingdoms of the world. Therefore, the Guardian asks who thinks the formative forces:
What thinks in the Spirit-Word
With thoughts
Which are formed from cosmic souls?
Again from the realm of the first hierarchy the answer comes to us:
The glow of the stars thinks.
First it was the flames that speak the words; the star-flames speak the words. The glow that come from the flames thinks.
The glow of the stars thinks,
The formative forces of the Cherubim glow;
They also glow in my head.
This is what the human being who stands within it all says.
In the primal beings' source of light
The human head finds
Thinking soul-forming at work:
It is I.
This is the second dialog – as though the beings of the first hierarchy were giving us cosmic permission to experience the “I am”:
What thinks in the Spirit-Word
With thoughts
Which are formed from cosmic souls?
The glow of the stars thinks,
The formative forces of the Cherubim glow;
They also glow in my head.
In the primal beings' source of light
The human head finds
Thinking soul-forming at work:
It is I.

The cosmic Spirit-Word must speak. Thoughts stream from it. But the thoughts are creative; the thoughts are permeated with forces; the thoughts stream; and cosmic beings and cosmic events, everything which is evolves from them. In it, in the thought bearing Cosmic-Word live the word-created cosmic thoughts. It is not mere thinking, it is not mere speaking, it is force, forces streaming in the Words. Forces inscribe the thoughts into the cosmic beings, into the cosmic events.
Thereby the third question which the Guardian of the Threshold asks from afar is indicated:
What impels in the Spirit-Word
With forces
Which live in the cosmic body?
The whole world, which resounds from the Cosmic-Word, which gleams from the cosmic-thoughts, is what thinks and speaks in humans, what bears the body, the thought pervaded cosmic body. The Thrones bear it, or rather the Thrones bear the thought illumined cosmic Spirit-Word that is within it.
Therefore, the answer to the Guardian's question comes from the first hierarchy:
The cosmic body of the stars impels,
The Thrones' bearing powers “body”.
We must form a picture which is otherwise unusual. But just as one “enlightens” from light, and can form the verb “to live” from life, so also can one form the word “to body” from the force used to bear the body. [The verb “leiben” – “to body” – does not exist in German or English. Here Rudolf Steiner invents the word, so to speak. There is a subtle difference between the two German words which mean “body”: Leib and Körper. In the theological sense Leib indicates a kind of soul function which the biological concept of Körper lacks. Because there is only one word in English for body, I feel justified in using “embody”, where Steiner said “to body” or “bodies” which are so awkward in English, as they are in German. But embody does follow his line of thought deriving “enlighten” from “light”, for example. If someone wishes to stick closely to the literal translation, he/she may substitute “to body” or “bodies” where “embody” or “embodies” appears.] For body is not dead, it is not something finished. Body is something which is active at every moment, mobile, alert, something that “bodies” [“leibt”].

Cosmic-Word, cosmic-thinking, cosmic-body; the speaking, thinking cosmic-body is what the Guardian's third question refers to:

In a certain sense, my sisters and brothers, it is a kind of conclusion to the path that began in the realm of illusion, of maya, which led us to the Guardian of the Threshold, which led us to self-knowledge, and through self-knowledge over to the spiritual realm, and allowed us to hear the choirs of the hierarchies. In a certain sense it is a conclusion when we now stand at the place where we may experience in ourselves the true “I am”, “'eyeh 'asher 'eyeh”.
In this dialog we can experience, when the threefold “It is I” streams from the heart, where it may stream from the heart; when it streams from the heart in such a way that it is the echo of what resounds in these hearts from the Seraphim, Cherubim, Thrones:

Here, my dear sisters and brothers, in a certain sense we have completed the first section of this First Class of the School.
We have heard the communications which we have received from the spiritual worlds – for this School is one which has been constituted by the spiritual worlds themselves; we have let the images and inspirations which can come from the spiritual worlds pass through us. They point out to our souls the path to understanding the true Human I in the surroundings of the Seraphim, Cherubim, Thrones.
My dear sisters and brothers! It was, as you have heard in the general anthroposophical lectures, Michael's super-sensible School in which such inner heartfelt teachings first resounded. They were the powerful pictures of the imaginative ritual at the beginning of the nineteenth century, where the souls who were selected to be close to Michael were taught the School's revelations of the fifteenth, sixteenth, seventeenth centuries, and which was led by Michael and his companions in the way described here. And now we are here in this anthroposophical School founded by Michael. We feel ourselves to be in it. They are the words of Michael which were to characterize the path which leads into the spiritual world and the human I: The words of Michael. These words of Michael of the super-sensible Michael-School constituted the first section.
When in September we find ourselves again in these Class Lessons, it will be Michael's will to describe the imaginative ritual revelations of the beginning of the nineteenth century. [2] [Due to the great increase in new Class members, the announced second section could not begin in September of 1924. Instead, repetition lessons – with additional content – were held. These will be the contents of Volume III. Due to Rudolf Steiner's premature death in March of 1925, the Esoteric School lessons were left incomplete.] That will be the second section. What has been presented to us in mantric words, will stand before our souls as pictures, which will be – to the extent possible – the pictures of the super-sensible imaginative ritual brought down at the beginning of the nineteenth century.
The third stage of this School will consist of what will lead us directly to the interpretations of the mantric words that were given in the super-sensible Michael School of the fifteenth, sixteenth, seventeenth centuries.

We should feel how we ourselves go through all this in the spiritual world. We should always keep looking back to the physical-sensory world of the earth and humbly absorb everything that takes place in the physical-sensory world of the earth.
Therefore, in conclusion let resound on our souls again what – if we are capable of absorbing it and appreciating it – what resounds from every stone, from every plant, from every moving cloud, from every bubbling spring, from every rustling wind, from the forests and the mountains, everywhere from the things and events that resound from the earthly sphere, if we are appreciative of it.
We were in the realm of the Seraphim, Cherubim, Thrones. Even the Guardian of the Threshold only called from afar. We go back again with humility, past the Guardian, out to the realm of sensory appearances. And again we let these words resound in us:
O man, know thyself!
So resounds the Cosmic-Word.
You hear it strong in soul,
You feel it firm in spirit.
Who speaks with such cosmic might?
Who speaks with such depth of heart?

My dear sisters and brothers, it is unfortunately the case that the measures, which have been repeated sufficiently within this Esoteric School, have been observed in a strange way by many who have become members by requesting membership and attained it; and just yesterday I had to criticize some rather unedifying matters. It is hard to believe, but it is really the case that members have left their blue membership certificates here on the chairs to reserve their places. It has also happened that three members have left notebooks – one folder and two notebooks – have been simply left lying around. The folder with the typewritten verses was found out on the street. From one of the notebooks could be copied what I told you yesterday. Another notebook was left lying in the Glasshaus. Therefore, it was necessary to expel three members of this School directly before this Class Lesson began.
With these, there have been nineteen expulsions from the School. One could have expected that earnestness would mean more to those who have already heard here what this School means. One of them loses the verses on the street, another leaves themhere, the third leaves them lying in the Glasshaus: so it was necessary to expel three quite prominent members of the School. And I can assure you, my dear sisters and brothers, that the strict observance of rules I informed you of at the beginning and often repeated, must be strictly observed. Such a School with the esoteric earnestness can only be maintained if its members really observe what is demanded in the name of the spiritual powers which direct it.
With true occult matters it is really so. And what has been often occurring in the Anthroposophical Society can no longer continue. That which is filled with earnestness by its own character, must also be treated with earnestness.
Neunzehnte Stunde
Meine lieben Freunde! Wir lassen wiederum an unserer Seele vorüberziehen zuerst jenen Spruch, der uns vergegenwärtigen kann, wie aus allem, was in der Welt ist und wird, was geworden ist in vergangenen Zeiten, ist in der Gegenwart, wird in der Zukunft, wie uns aus alledem entgegentönt, entgegentönt immer dazu aufrufend, Selbsterkenntnis zu suchen, die da ist die Grundlage für wirkliche, für wahrhaftige Welterkenntnis:
O Mensch, erkenne dich selbst!
So tönt das Weltenwort.
Du hörst es seelenkräftig,
Du fühlst es geistgewaltig.Wer spricht so weltenmächtig?
Wer spricht so herzinniglich?Wirkt es durch des Raumes Weitenstrahlung
In deines Sinnes Seinserleben?
Tönt es durch der Zeiten Wellenweben
In deines Lebens Werdestrom?Bist du es selbst, der sich
Im Raumesfühlen, im Zeiterleben
Das Wort erschafft, dich fremd
Erfühlend in Raumes Seelenleere,
Weil du des Denkens Kraft
Verlierst im Zeitvernichtungsstrome.
Nun, meine lieben Schwestern und Brüder, wir haben an unserer Seele vorüberziehen lassen mantrische Sprüche, welche in ihrer Kraft enthalten den Weg hin ins Geisterland, vorüber an dem Hüter der Schwelle, hinein in die erst dunkle, finstere, nachtbedeckte geistige Welt, die dann erst licht sich fühlt, des Weiteren licht wird für seelisches Wahrnehmen. Wir haben in dieser geistigen Welt geschen, wie der Mensch teilhaftig ist - gewöhnlich unbewusst, aber er kann sich dessen bewusst werden - des Gespräches der höheren Hierarchien miteinander, desjenigen, was wie wirkend und webend mit den höheren Hierarchien zusammen die Welt selber als Weltenwort spricht. Und wir haben zuletzt uns versetzen können in dasjenige Weltengebiet, wo ineinander klingen die Chöre der verschiedenen Hierarchien. Das wollen wir noch einmal vor unsere Seele führen, wie ineinander klingen die Chöre der verschiedenen Hierarchien, da, wo wir schon hindurchgedrungen sind durch dasjenige, was die Wesenheiten der zweiten Hierarchie sprechen, wo wir hindurchgedrungen sind durch dasjenige, was die Wesen der ersten Hierarchie aussprechen. Nunmehr kommen wir dazu, sie sprechen zu hören in ihrem Zusammenklang wie im Chore.
Der Hüter macht uns darauf aufmerksam - wir kennen das schon aus vorigen Stunden -:
Sieh’ des Äther-Farbenbogens
Lichtgewalt’ges Rund,
Lass’ durch deiner Augen
Lichterschaffene Kraft
Dein Ich den Kreis durchdringen,
Und dann schau von jenseit’ger Warte
Farbenflutend die Weltenschale.
Nachdem uns der Hüter auf dies Geheimnis, auf dies geistige Geheimnis des Regenbogens hingewiesen hat, tönt es wie aus dem Chore der Angeloi, Archangeloi, Archai:
Empfind’ unsrer Gedanken
Farbenatmend Leben
In der Schale Lichtesfluten;
Wir tragen Sinnenschein
In Geistes-Wesensreiche
Und wenden weltdurchdrungen
Uns höhern Geistern dienend zu.
Die Geister der dritten Hierarchie erklären, wie sie im Menschendienste dienen wollen den Geistern der zweiten Hierarchie, den Exusiai, Dynamis, Kyriotetes. Aus deren Bereich hören wir wiederum im Chore:
Euer Empfangenes
Aus totem Sinnenschein Belebtes:
Wir wecken es im Sein;
Wir schenken es den Strahlen,
Die des Stoffes Nichtigkeit
In des Geistes Wesenheit
Liebewebend offenbaren.
Und wenn wir so gehört haben, wie die Wesenheiten der zweiten Hierarchie weltenschöpferisch an unser Ich herantreten, dann tönt der Chor der ersten Hierarchie, der Throne, Seraphine, Cherubine:
In deinen Willenswelten
Fühl’ unser Weltenwirken;
Geist erglänzt im Stoffe,
Wenn wir denkend schaffen;
Geist erschafft im Stoffe,
Wenn wir wollend leben;
Welt ist Ich-wollend Geistes-Wort.
Nun stehen wir drinnen im Geisteswort, in jenem Geisteswort, das dem Weltenschaffen zugrunde liegt. Wir fühlen um uns herum dieses Geisteswort. Wir fühlen die Welt durchdrungen von diesem Geisteswort. Wir fühlen uns selber umwoben von diesem Geisteswort. Wir fühlen eindringen in unser inneres Menschenwesen dieses Geisteswort. Wir fühlen zuletzt einströmen in unser Herz dieses weltenweite Geisteswort. Da fühlen wir uns mit unserem ganzen Menschenwesen in dem Wellen dieses Geisteswortes. Da fühlen wir uns geistig im wortgewobenen Weltengeiste.
Da ist der Hüter in der Ferne. Wir sind am Hüter vorbeigeschritten. Er ist nun ganz in der Ferne. Leise nur hören wir ihn, wie er jetzt ein letztes ermahnendes Wort aus weiter Ferne an unser Geistesohr heranströmen lässt.
Der Hüter spricht aus der Ferne. Das Menschen-Ich weiß sich im Bereich des seraphisch-cherubisch-Throne-getragenen Geisteswortes. Der Hüter spricht:
Wer spricht im Geistes-Wort
Mit der Stimme,
Die im Weltenfeuer lodert?
Da tönt es als Antwort aus dem Reiche der ersten Hierarchie:
Es sprechen Sternen-Flammen,
Es flammen seraph’sche Feuer-Mächte;
Sie flammen auch
- so fühlen wir die Weltensprache, die Sprache des Weltenwortes in unserem Innern —
Sie flammen auch in meinem Herzen.
In des Urseins Liebe-Quell
Findet Menschen-Herz
Schaffendes Geistes-Flammen-Sprechen:
Es ist Ich.
Meine lieben Schwestern und Brüder! Derjenige, der in der Esoterik Reich eindringen will, sollte eigentlich zunächst fühlen, dass das uralt heilige «ejeh asher ejeh» - «Ich bin Ich», «Ich bin» - ein heiliges Wort ist, das aus einer jenseitigen Wirklichkeit herübertönt. Es ist nur ein Abglanz, was wir im flüchtigen Gedanken als «Ich bin» festhalten.
Eigentlich müssen wir uns bewusst sein, dass das wahre «Ich bin» zunächst im Erdenbereiche nicht aus uns spricht, dass wir, wollen wir würdig und wert «Ich bin» sagen, wir erst hineinkommen müssen in das Reich der Seraphine, Cherubine und Throne. Dort erst klingt das «Ich bin» wahr. Hier im Erdenbereiche ist es Illusion.
Da aber müssen wir, damit wir das wahre «Ich bin» in uns erleben, da müssen wir das Weltenwort hören. Da müssen wir die Frage vernehmen vom Hüter der Schwelle, wer denn eigentlich im Weltenworte spricht. Seraphine, die mit Blitzesflammen, GeistesBlitzesflammen ihren Weg durch die Welt wellen, sie sprechen die Feuersprache des Weltenwortes da, wo wir nun stehen. Das Wort ist Flamme, flammende Stimme. Und indem wir in diesem lodernden Weltenfeuer, das in der flammenden Stimme die Feuersprache spricht, uns erleben, erleben wir das wahre «Ich bin».
Das ist in den Worten enthalten, die jetzt als Frage vom fernen Hüter der Schwelle - wir sind längst an ihm vorübergegangen - und als Antwort kommen aus dem Bereich der ersten Hierarchie:
Wer spricht im Geistes-Wort
Mit der Stimme,
Die im Weltenfeuer lodert?Es sprechen Sternen-Flammen,
Es flammen seraph’sche Feuer-Mächte;
Sie flammen auch in meinem Herzen.

Schaffendes Geistes-Flammen-Sprechen:
Es ist Ich.
Wenn Menschenwort erklingt, dann spricht aus Menschenwort Menschendenken. Und wenn Geistes-Weltenwort erklingt, dann spricht aus Geistes-Weltenwort Weltendenken. Das liegt in der Frage des Hüters, die er jetzt aus der Ferne als zweite stellt.
Der Hüter spricht aus der Ferne. Das Menschen-Ich weiß sich im Bereich des seraphisch-cherubinisch-Throne-getragenen GeistesWortes:

Es sind diejenigen Gedanken, die aus den Weltenseelen, aus allen Weltenseelen, die angehören den Wesenheiten der verschiedenen Hierarchien, herauskommen. Die bilden, gestalten, formen alles, was in den Reichen der Welt ist. Deshalb frägt der Hüter, wer da denkt die bildekräftigen Gedanken:

Wieder kommt es zu uns aus dem Reich der ersten Hierarchie:
Es denken der Sterne Leuchter.
Erst waren es die Flammen, die sprechen die Worte; die Sternenflammen sprechen die Worte. Die Leuchter, aus denen die Flammen kommen, denken.

Denkendes Seelen-Bilde-Wirken:
Es ist Ich.
Das Welten-Geisteswort: Sprechen ist es; Gedanken strömen aus ihm. Aber die Gedanken sind schaffend; die Gedanken sind kräftedurchdrungen; sie strömen, die Gedanken; und Weltenwesen und Weltengeschehnisse werden daraus, alles was ist. In ihm leben die wortgebildeten Weltgedanken, die gedankentragenden Weltenworte. Das ist nicht bloß Denken, das ist nicht bloß Sprechen; das ist Schaffen, das ist Kraften, Kräfteströmen in den Worten. Kräfte zeichnen die Gedanken hinein in die Weltenwesen, in die Weltengeschehnisse.
Darauf deutet die dritte Frage, die der Hüter der Schwelle aus der Ferne spricht:

Die im Weltenleibe leben?
Die ganze Welt, die da ertönt vom Weltenwort, die da durchleuchtet wird vom Weltendenken, sie ist Weltenleib, so wie dasjenige, was im Menschen denkt und spricht, leibgetragen ist, so ist dasjenige, was im Weltenwort ertönt, im Weltenwort gedankendurchleuchtet scheint: Weltenleib. Ihn tragen die Throne, oder besser gesagt, er ist dasjenige, worinnen die Throne das gedankendurchleuchtete WeltenGeisteswort tragen.
Daher antwortet es aus dem Reiche der ersten Hierarchie auf die Frage des Hüters:
Es kraftet der Sternen-Welten-Leib,
Es leiben der Throne Trag-Gewalten.
Wir müssen ein Wort bilden, das sonst ungewöhnlich ist. Aber geradeso wie man von Licht «leuchten», von Leben eben das Verbum «leben» bilden kann, so kann man von dem, was an Kraft aufbringt im Tragen der Leib, das Wort «leiben» bilden. Denn «Leib» ist nichts Totes, Leib ist nichts Fertiges, Leib ist etwas, was in jedem Augenblicke tätig, beweglich, regsam ist, was «leibt».

Es ist gewissermaßen, meine Schwestern und Brüder, eine Art Abschluss dieses Weges, der begonnen hat im Reiche der Illusion, im Reiche der Maja, der uns geführt hat zum Hüter der Schwelle, der uns geführt hat in Selbsterkenntnis, durch die Selbsterkenntnis hinüber in die geistigen Reiche, der uns hat hören lassen die Chöre der Hierarchien; es ist gewissermaßen ein Abschluss, wenn wir jetzt stehen auf der Stelle, wo wir das wahre «Ich bin», «ejeh asher ejeh», in uns erleben dürfen.
In diesem Dialoge können wir es erleben, wenn uns das dreifache «Es ist Ich» aus dem Herzen quillt da, wo es uns aus dem Herzen quellen darf; wenn es uns aus dem Herzen quillt so, dass es wird in unserem Herzen das Echo desjenigen, was Seraphine, Cherubine, Throne in diesem Herzen erklingen lassen:

Damit, meine lieben Schwestern und Brüder, ist in gewissem Sinne der erste Abschnitt dieser ersten Klasse der Schule absolviert.
Wir haben diejenigen Mitteilungen, die wir bekommen können aus den geistigen Welten - denn diese Schule ist eine Schule, eingesetzt von der geistigen Welt selber -, wir haben diejenigen Bilder und Inspirationen, die da kommen können aus der geistigen Welt, an uns vorüberziehen lassen. Sie stellen vor unserer Seele dar, welches der Weg ist hin bis zu der Ergreifung des wahren Menschen-Ichs in der Umgebung der Seraphine, Cherubine, Throne.
Meine lieben Schwestern und Brüder! Es war, wie Ihr gehört habt in den allgemeinen anthroposophischen Vorträgen, des Michael übersinnliche Schule, in der zuerst solche inneren Herzenslehren ertönten. Es waren dann die gewaltigen Bilder in dem imaginativen Kultus im Beginne des neunzehnten Jahrhunderts, wo vor die Seelen, die dazu ausersehen waren, in der Umgebung des Michael zu sein, sich hinstellten die Offenbarungen der Schule aus dem fünfzehnten, sechzehnten, siebzehnten Jahrhundert, die in der übersinnlichen Welt von Michael und den Seinen in dem ausgesprochenen Sinne selbst geleitet wurde. Und jetzt stehen wir vor dieser von Michael begründeten anthroposophischen Schule. Wir fühlen uns in derselben. Michael-Worte sind es, die den Weg charakterisieren sollten, der in die geistige Welt und in das menschliche Ich hineinführt, MichaelWorte. Diese Michael-Worte der esoterischen Michael-Schule, sie bildeten sozusagen den ersten Abschnitt.
Wenn wir — was dann anzukündigen sein wird - im September wiederum uns finden zu diesen Klassenstunden, dann wird es der Wille der Michael-Macht sein, zunächst zu schildern die imaginativen Kultus-Offenbarungen vom Beginne des neunzehnten Jahrhunderts. Das wird der zweite Abschnitt sein. Dasjenige, was an mantrischen Worten jetzt an unsere Seele gedrungen ist, es wird weiter in Bildern vor unserer Seele stehen, die - soweit dies möglich ist - die heruntergestellten Bilder des übersinnlichen imaginativen Kultus vom Beginne des neunzehnten Jahrhunderts sein werden.
Das dritte Kapitel dieser Schule wird bilden dasjenige, was uns unmittelbar hinführen wird zu jenen Interpretationen, die da gegeben wurden zu den mantrischen Worten in der übersinnlichen MichaelSchule des fünfzehnten, sechzehnten, siebzehnten Jahrhunderts.
Wir sollen fühlen, wie wir uns hineinstellen durch all das in die geistige Welt selber. Wir sollen aber immer wieder und wiederum zurückblicken auf die physisch-sinnliche Erdenwelt und in bescheidener Weise aufnehmen dasjenige, was in der sinnlich-physischen Erdenwelt waltet.
Daher lassen wir zum Schluss wiederum an unsere Seele tönen alles dasjenige, was - wenn wir aufnahmefähig sind, wenn wir einen Sinn dafür haben - aus jedem Stein, aus jeder Pflanze, aus jedem Tier, aus jeder ziehenden Wolke, aus jedem sprudelnden Quell, aus jedem rauschenden Winde, aus den Wäldern und von den Bergen, überall aus den Dingen und Vorgängen des Erdenrundes tönt, - wenn wir einen Sinn dafür haben, was da tönt.
Wir waren im Reiche der Seraphine, Cherubine, Throne. Selbst des Hüters Stimme hat von Ferne her nur ertönt. Wir gehen in Bescheidenheit wieder zurück, an dem Hüter vorbei, hinaus ins Reich des Sinnenscheins. Und wiederum lassen wir die Worte an uns heranklingen:
O Mensch, erkenne dich selbst!
So tönt das Weltenwort.
Du hörst es seelenkräftig,
Du fühlst es geistgewaltig.Wer spricht so weltenmächtig?
Wer spricht so herzinniglich?Wirkt es durch des Raumes Weitenstrahlung
In deines Sinnes Seinserleben?
Tönt es durch der Zeiten Wellenweben
In deines Lebens Werdestrom?Bist du es selbst, der sich
Im Raumesfühlen, im Zeiterleben
Das Wort erschafft, dich fremd
Erfühlend in Raumes Seelenleere,
Weil du des Denkens Kraft
Verlierst im Zeitvernichtungsstrome.
Meine lieben Schwestern und Brüder, es ist ja nun einmal so, dass leider die Maßregeln, auf welche genügend hingewiesen worden ist innerhalb dieser esoterischen Schule, sonderbar beobachtet werden von vielen, die Mitglieder geworden sind, angesucht haben um die Mitgliedschaft und sie auch haben erwerben können; und ich musste ja schon gestern mancherlei urgieren, monieren. Man sollte es nicht glauben, aber vorgekommen ist es ja, dass Mitglieder mit ihren blauen esoterischen Zertifikaten hier ihre Plätze belegt haben. Aber vorgekommen ist auch, dass von drei Seiten her Hefte - eine Kapsel eigentlich und zwei Hefte - mit den mantrischen Sprüchen dieser Schule einfach liegen gelassen worden sind. Die Kapsel mit den mit Schreibmaschine geschriebenen Sprüchen ist draußen auf der Straße gefunden worden. Von einem Hefte konnte in der Weise abgeschrieben werden, wie ich’s Ihnen gestern erzählt habe. Ein anderes Heft ist im Glashaus liegen geblieben. Sodass es nötig geworden ist, drei Mitglieder dieser Schule, unmittelbar bevor diese Klassenstunde begonnen hat, auszuschließen.
Damit sind wir angekommen bei dem neunzehnten Ausschluss aus dieser Schule. Man sollte meinen, dass der Ernst mehr sprechen könnte aus den Seelen derjenigen, die hier doch schon gehört haben dasjenige, was diese Schule bedeutet. Der eine verliert die Sprüche auf der Straße, der zweite lässt sie hier liegen, der dritte lässt sie liegen im Glashause; und es wird nötig, drei durchaus prominente Mitglieder aus der Schule auszuschließen. Und ich kann Ihnen die Versicherung geben, meine lieben Schwestern und Brüder, dass dasjenige, was mit Bezug auf die strenge Handhabung der Maßregeln dieser Schule im Beginne und dann immer wieder gesagt worden ist, strenge eben gehandhabt werden muss. Eine solche Schule mit dem esoterischen Ernst kann eben nur aufrechterhalten werden, wenn tatsächlich ihre Mitglieder dasjenige innehalten, was im Namen der geistigen Mächte, die dieser Schule vorstehen, verlangt werden muss.
Es ist in wahrhaft okkulten Dingen so. Und es kann dasjenige, was vielfach gewaltet hat in der Anthroposophischen Gesellschaft, nicht weiter fortwalten. Es muss dasjenige, was mit Ernst durch seinen eigenen Charakter erfüllt ist, auch wirklich mit Ernst genommen werden können.
Nineteenth Hour
My dear friends! Let us once again allow our souls to reflect on that saying which reminds us how everything that is and will be in the world, everything that has been in times past, is in the present, and will be in the future, how all of this calls out to us, always calling us to seek self-knowledge, which is the foundation for true, genuine knowledge of the world: to seek self-knowledge, which is the foundation for real, true knowledge of the world:
O man, know thyself!
So sounds the word of the world.
You hear it with the power of your soul,
You feel it with the power of your spirit.Who speaks so powerfully of the world?
Who speaks so heartfelt?Does it work through the vast radiance of space
In the experience of your mind?
Does it sound through the waves of time
In the stream of your life?Is it you yourself who,
In the feeling of space, in the experience of time,
Creates the word, feeling yourself alien
In the emptiness of space's soul,
Because you lose the power of thought
in the stream of time's destruction.
Now, my dear sisters and brothers, we have let mantric sayings pass over our souls, which in their power contain the way into the spirit realm, past the guardian of the threshold, into the at first dark, gloomy, night-covered spiritual world, which only then feels light, and then becomes light for spiritual perception. In this spiritual world, we have seen how human beings participate—usually unconsciously, but they can become aware of it—in the conversation of the higher hierarchies with each other, in that which, working and weaving together with the higher hierarchies, speaks the world itself as the Word of the World. And finally, we have been able to transport ourselves into that realm of the world where the choirs of the various hierarchies resound together. Let us once again bring this before our soul, how the choirs of the various hierarchies resound together, where we have already penetrated through what the beings of the second hierarchy speak, where we have penetrated through what the beings of the first hierarchy express. Now we come to hear them speaking in their harmony, as in a choir.
The Guardian draws our attention to this – we already know this from previous lessons:
See the etheric rainbow
Circle of light,
Let through your eyes
The power created by light
Your self penetrate the circle,
And then look from the other side
At the world shell flooding with color.
After the Guardian has pointed out this mystery, this spiritual mystery of the rainbow, it sounds as if from the choir of the Angeloi, Archangeloi, Archai:

The spirits of the third hierarchy explain how they want to serve the spirits of the second hierarchy, the Exusiai, Dynamis, Kyriotetes, in the service of humanity. From their realm we hear again in chorus:
What you have received
From dead rays of light:
We awaken it in being;
We give it to the rays,
Which reveal the nothingness of matter
In the spirit's essence
Reveal living love.
And when we have heard how the beings of the second hierarchy approach our ego in a world-creating way, then the choir of the first hierarchy, the Thrones, Seraphim, and Cherubim, sounds:
In your worlds of will
Feel our world activity;
Spirit shines in matter,
When we create through thinking;
Spirit creates in matter,
When we live through willing;
The world is the word of spirit willing through the I.
Now we stand within the word of spirit, in that word of spirit which underlies the creation of the world. We feel this word of spirit around us. We feel the world permeated by this word of spirit. We feel ourselves enveloped by this word of spirit. We feel this word of spirit penetrating our inner human being. Finally, we feel this world-wide word of spirit flowing into our hearts. We feel ourselves with our whole human being in the waves of this word of spirit. We feel ourselves spiritually in the word-woven world spirit.
There is the guardian in the distance. We have passed the guardian. He is now far away. We hear him only faintly as he now lets a last admonishing word flow from afar to our spiritual ear.
The guardian speaks from afar. The human ego knows itself to be in the realm of the seraphic-cherubic-throne-borne word of the spirit. The guardian speaks:
Who speaks in the word of the spirit
With the voice
That blazes in the world fire?
Then a reply sounds from the realm of the first hierarchy:
The star flames speak,
Seraphic powers of fire blaze;
They also blaze
— thus we feel the language of the world, the language of the world word within us —
They also blaze in my heart.
In the source of love of primordial being
The human heart finds
The creative speech of the spirit's flame:
It is I.
My dear sisters and brothers! Those who wish to enter the realm of esotericism should first feel that the ancient sacred “ejeh asher ejeh” — “I am I,” “I am” — is a sacred word that echoes from a reality beyond. It is only a reflection of what we hold in our fleeting thoughts as “I am.”
Actually, we must be aware that the true “I am” does not speak from within us in the earthly realm at first, that if we want to say “I am” with dignity and worth, we must first enter the realm of the seraphim, cherubim, and thrones. Only there does the “I am” sound true. Here in the earthly realm, it is an illusion.
But in order to experience the true “I am” within ourselves, we must hear the Word of the World. We must hear the question from the Guardian of the Threshold: who actually speaks in the Word of the World? Seraphim, who wave their way through the world with flashes of lightning, flashes of spirit lightning, speak the fiery language of the world word where we now stand. The word is flame, flaming voice. And as we experience ourselves in this blazing world fire, which speaks the fiery language in the flaming voice, we experience the true “I am.”
This is contained in the words that now come as a question from the distant guardian of the threshold—we have long since passed him—and as an answer from the realm of the first hierarchy:
Who speaks in the spirit word
With the voice
That blazes in the world fire?Star flames speak,
Seraphic powers of fire blaze;
They also blaze in my heart.

The human heart finds
The creative speech of the spirit flame:

When human words are spoken, human thinking speaks through human words. And when spiritual world words are spoken, world thinking speaks through spiritual world words. This is the question that the guardian now asks from afar as his second question.
The guardian speaks from afar. The human ego knows itself to be in the realm of the seraphic-cherubic-throne-borne spiritual word:
What thinks in the spiritual word
With thoughts
That form world souls?
These are the thoughts that come from the world souls, from all the world souls that belong to the beings of the various hierarchies. They form, shape, and mold everything that is in the realms of the world. That is why the guardian asks who thinks these powerful thoughts:
What thinks in the Word of the Spirit
With thoughts
That form from world souls?
Again it comes to us from the realm of the first hierarchy:
The stars' candlesticks think.
First it was the flames that spoke the words; the star flames speak the words. The candlesticks from which the flames come think.
The candlesticks of the stars think,
Cherubic image powers shine;
They also shine in my head.
- So says the person who stands within.
In the light source of primordial being
The human head finds
The workings of the thinking soul:
It is I.
This is the second conversation: As if the beings of the first hierarchy within ourselves would give us permission from the worlds to experience the “I am”:
What thinks in the word of the spirit
With thoughts
That form from world souls?The stars' candlesticks think,

In the light source of primordial being
The human head finds
Thinking soul image work:
It is I.

The soul's image-working:
It is I.
The word of the world spirit: it is speech; thoughts flow from it. But the thoughts are creative; the thoughts are imbued with power; they flow, the thoughts; and world beings and world events arise from them, everything that is. In it live the word-formed world thoughts, the thought-bearing world words. That is not merely thinking, that is not merely speaking; that is creating, that is power, power flowing in the words. Powers draw the thoughts into the world beings, into the world events.
This is indicated by the third question, which the Guardian of the Threshold speaks from afar:
What powers in the word of the Spirit
With powers,
That live in the world body?
The whole world, which resounds with the world word, which is illuminated by world thinking, is the world body, just as that which thinks and speaks in human beings is carried by the body, so that which resounds in the world word is illuminated by thought in the world word: the body of the world. It is carried by the thrones, or rather, it is that in which the thrones carry the thought-illuminated word of the world spirit.
Therefore, from the realm of the first hierarchy, it answers the guardian's question:
The body of the star worlds is powerful,
The powers that carry the thrones are powerful.
We must form a word that is otherwise unusual. But just as one can form the word “shine” from light, and from life one can form the verb “to live,” so too can one form the word “to live” from that which exerts power in carrying the body. For the body is not something dead, the body is not something finished, the body is something that is active, mobile, and lively at every moment, something that “lives.”
The powers that carry the thrones live;
They also live in my limbs.

The powerful rule of the world's bearers:
It is I.
World word, world thought, world body; speaking, thinking world body, to which the guardian's third question refers:
What is active in the spirit word
With powers

In a sense, my sisters and brothers, this is a kind of conclusion to this path, which began in the realm of illusion, in the realm of Maya, which led us to the Guardian of the Threshold, which led us to self-knowledge, through self-knowledge into the spiritual realms, which allowed us to hear the choirs of the hierarchies; it is, in a sense, a conclusion when we now stand at the point where we are allowed to experience the true “I am,” “ejeh asher ejeh,” within ourselves.
In this dialogue, we can experience it when the threefold “It is I” springs from our hearts, where it is allowed to spring from our hearts; when it springs from our hearts in such a way that it becomes the echo in our hearts of what seraphim, cherubim, and thrones make resound in these hearts:
Who speaks in the Word of the Spirit
With the voice
That blazes in the fire of the world?Star flames speak,
Seraphic powers of fire blaze;
They also blaze in my heart.
In the source of love of the primordial being
The human heart finds
Creative spirit-flame speech:
It is I.What thinks in the word of the spirit
With thoughts
Which form world souls?The stars' candlesticks think,
Cherubic image powers shine;
They also shine in my head.
In the light source of primordial being
The human head finds
The soul's image-working:
It is I.What powers in the spirit-word
With powers
That live in the world-body?The body of the star-worlds powers,
The powers that bear the thrones live;
They also live in my limbs.
In the source of primordial life
Human limbs find
The powerful rule of the world's bearers:
It is I.
With that, my dear sisters and brothers, in a certain sense, the first section of this first class of the school has been completed.
We have allowed those messages that we can receive from the spiritual worlds—for this school is a school established by the spiritual world itself—we have allowed those images and inspirations that can come from the spiritual world to pass before us. They reveal to our soul what the path is to grasping the true human ego in the realm of the seraphim, cherubim, and thrones.
My dear sisters and brothers! As you have heard in the general anthroposophical lectures, it was in Michael's supersensible school that such inner teachings of the heart first resounded. Then there were the powerful images in the imaginative cult at the beginning of the nineteenth century, where the revelations of the school from the fifteenth and sixteenth, and seventeenth centuries, which was guided in the supersensible world by Michael and his followers in the sense expressed. And now we stand before this anthroposophical school founded by Michael. We feel ourselves to be in it. It is Michael's words that should characterize the path that leads into the spiritual world and into the human I, Michael's words. These Michael words of the esoteric Michael School formed, so to speak, the first section.
When we meet again in September for these class lessons, as will be announced, it will be the will of the Michael power to first describe the imaginative cult revelations from the beginning of the nineteenth century. That will be the second section. What has now penetrated our soul in the form of mantric words will continue to stand before our soul in images which, as far as this is possible, will be the images of the supersensible imaginative cult from the beginning of the nineteenth century.
The third chapter of this school will consist of what will lead us directly to those interpretations that were given to the mantric words in the supersensible Michael School of the fifteenth, sixteenth, and seventeenth centuries.
We should feel how we enter through all this into the spiritual world itself. But we should look back again and again at the physical-sensory world of the earth and modestly take in what prevails in the sensory-physical world of the earth.
Therefore, in conclusion, let us once again allow our souls to resonate with everything that—if we are receptive, if we have a sense for it—resounds from every stone, every plant, every animal, every passing cloud, every bubbling spring, from every rushing wind, from the forests and from the mountains, from everywhere, from the things and processes of the earthly sphere, resounds – if we have a sense for what resounds there.
We were in the realm of the seraphim, cherubim, and thrones. Even the voice of the guardian resounded only from afar. We return in humility, past the guardian, out into the realm of sensory perception. And again we let the words resonate within us:
O human, know thyself!
Thus resounds the word of the world.
Thou hearest it with the power of thy soul,
Thou feelest it with the power of thy spirit.
